Explore Local History at the Arkell Museum
The Arkell Museum in Canajoharie is located 45 minutes from Rivers Ledge Apartments, and it’s one of the best places to learn about American art and Mohawk Valley history. Their American painting collection includes seven oil paintings by acclaimed landscape painter Winslow Homer, and many other works by Thomas Benton, Gilbert Stuart, Childe Hassam, and other renowned artists.
Mohawk Valley history is another key part of the museum, and their collection of photographs, diaries, letters, and portraits continues to grow. The Arkell Museum even has some fascinating exhibits on the local Beech-Nut Packing Company, which was co-created by museum founder Bartlett Arkell.
Discover the Story of America’s Pastime at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum
Cooperstown is a small community with world-class attractions at the southern end of Otsego Lake, and it’s well worth the 80-minute drive from Rivers Ledge Apartments. The first local hotspot that baseball fans and history lovers should check out is the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. This is where baseball’s most recognizable and influential players are enshrined, from Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron to Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.
A walk through the Plaque Gallery is a must, as you’ll be able to see all the bronze plaques honoring the Hall of Fame inductees over the years, who are true legends of the sport. The rest of the museum is filled with exhibits that tell the story of baseball and its impact on our lives and the country. Get a close look at artifacts, photography, equipment, and more during your trip to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
Soak Up Nature, Art, and Culture at Glimmerglass State Park
Perfect for picnicking, hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities throughout the year, Glimmerglass State Park in Cooperstown is a great place to enjoy the beautiful views of Otsego Lake, which is the “Glimmerglass” of James Fenimore Cooper’s “Leatherstocking Tales.” There are multiple points of interest at this state park, including the Beaver Pond Nature Trail, the Covered Bridge, the swimming beach and picnic areas, and the historic Hyde Hall.
Hyde Hall is a prime example of a neoclassic country mansion, and it was constructed back in the early 19th century. Today, it’s open seasonally for guided tours and special events and programs. Come see the amazing collection of furniture, paintings, and decorative arts in the home.
Try Delicious Craft Beverages in Cooperstown
Although Cooperstown has even more places to visit like The Farmers’ Museum and the Fenimore Art Museum, sometimes it’s nice to relax with a refreshing drink. While you’re in the area, stop by Brewery Ommegang or the Cooperstown Distillery (which also has a tasting room and bar in downtown Saratoga).
Brewery Ommegang is a local craft brewery that specializes in Belgian-style beer, but you can expect to find a wide array of options on their menu, as well as hard cider. Food is served in their on-site restaurant, Cafe Ommegang, and they are popularly known for live outdoor concerts during the summer.
If you’re a cocktail fan instead, then you’ll want to add Cooperstown Distillery to your day trip. They are the first and only distillery in Otsego County, and their products include various types of whiskey, vodka, bourbon, and more. Step inside their tasting lounge and bar for creative craft cocktails made with their own handcrafted spirits.
Take a Stroll Through the Beautiful Landis Arboretum
Plan a nature hike near Rivers Ledge at the Landis Arboretum in Esperance, which is just 40 minutes away. Founded in 1951 by Fred Lape, with support from friend and colleague George Landis, the Landis Arboretum is an arboretum and public garden comprising hundreds of acres in Schoharie and Montgomery counties.
The Landis Arboretum features beautiful plants, sculptures, a peaceful meditation garden, hiking trails, and picnic areas. Interpretive signage has been set up to help visitors learn about the local ecosystems, trees, shrubs, and more. The grounds are open year round, and admission is free (a $5 donation is suggested).
Pick Up Unique Gifts For Yourself or Others
In addition to the museum gift shops and craft beverage producers, there are a couple other noteworthy shopping spots to check out during your day trip. The first is The Tepee, a vintage roadside attraction in Cherry Valley that’s fun for a quick break. Take a photo of the 50-foot tepee, and then head in to browse a great selection of products, many of which are made by Native American artists.
Another local store you can visit is the world-famous Beekman 1802 Kindness Shop in Sharon Springs, founded by Josh and Dr. Brent. They specialize in goat milk skincare and bath products, but the store also carries handcrafted goods, housewares, and more.
Or, if you made it to Cooperstown, you’ll find plenty of stores located right on Main Street. Stretch your legs for a bit and enjoy browsing at the Silver Fox Gift Shop, Tin Bin Alley, Mickey’s Place, and Riverwood, to name a few.
