Tips For Moving Into Your Luxury Waterfront Apartment In The Winter

Moving during winter in the northeast can feel a bit overwhelming, but it’s not the end of the world—there are simply a few extra details you need to consider. If you’re ready to make your home at Rivers Ledge during the colder months, check out these tips to help your experience be a little less stressful.

Think About Snow Removal

At Rivers Ledge, you don’t have to worry about snow removal—we’ve got that covered for you! However, you may need to think about snow removal at your old place.

If you do need to shovel or plow as part of your moving process, be sure to clear a wide enough path for multiple people to use at once. When bringing large items from your home, your team of helpers will benefit from having a spacious walkway! You may also want to consider throwing some sand or salt down to give a little extra traction.

Pack With The Season In Mind

While packing your precious items for a big move, you may consider things like putting breakable items in bubble wrap, labeling boxes, and keeping your important documents in your personal vehicle. However, when it comes to packing during the winter, you may want to add a few extra steps to your list.

One of the most important things to consider is how to protect your furniture. One good way to ensure the legs of your furniture won’t be damaged by moisture is to wrap them in thick plastic sheeting, which can be found at most hardware stores. Cut a large sheet of the plastic, place it under one furniture leg, and then wrap it up and secure it with tape. Extra tip: place the tape only on the plastic sheeting, so as not to damage the finish on your pieces.

We’d also suggest that you don’t overpack your boxes. Icy weather is treacherous enough; if you overload yourself, you may end up taking a tumble, which is no fun for anyone. A few more boxes is not the end of the world, and it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Set Aside A Few Layers Of Clothing

While packing, set aside a few layers of clothing—such as a hat, gloves, sweatshirt, and light jacket—and place them in the front seat of your car or wherever you’ll have ease of access. Winter weather can be unpredictable, and moving boxes and items (or directing where to place them) is not light work!

You’ll be glad to have the option to shed or add layers during the day as you move into your new space.

Protect Your Floors

Carrying boxes in and out of your apartment means you’ll be tracking snow (and maybe even salt and mud) everywhere you go. It’s easy to forget in the chaos, but movers may not be as careful as you are when it comes to cleaning their shoes.

Place a large mat by the door for people to wipe their feet on, and consider laying down a plastic tarp or drop cloth in the entryway. When moving boxes, you may want to divide your team into two: one team to carry boxes into the protected entryway, another team (with clean shoes or socks) to bring the items to their proper location.

You can also make it a two-step process if you have a smaller group of helpers—simply bring everything to the protected entry area first, then have everyone remove their shoes to carry your things to their places.

If your apartment at Rivers Ledge is on the ground floor, you can also unload your boxes into your garage space, as all ground floor apartments are directly connected to their garages. Second floor apartments have ground floor garages too, which is great for temporary storage while you get things settled upstairs.
